Protecting Our Oceans Against Deep Sea Mining

NOAA-HURL Archives, 2004

On April 24, 2025 President Trump issued an Executive Order to unleash the deep seabed mining industry in both federal and international waters.

The EO directs relevant agencies to expedite approving permits and contracts for seabed mineral exploration, mining, and monitoring

This goes against the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, International Seabed Authority and sets a dangerous geopolitical

precedent to other countries that they can do the same.

32 countries have already said no to deep sea mining due to the economic, environmental, social, and climate risks. This EO ignores this entirely.

The deep sea is our sacred place of creation. We have an inherent responsibility to care for and protect all that precedes us on island Earth.

“The Kumulipo, a Hawaiian creation story, tells of the union between Kumulipo, the first male, and Pōele, the first female and a coral polyp from which the first creature on earth was born - emerging from the deep sea to inhabit the shorelines where Indigenous Hawaiians live to this day.”
