The ʻekupuʻu, a small finch, is one of two remaining endemic bird species on Kamole/Kauō (Laysan) Island. Its name, ʻekupuʻu, was found in the Kumulpo, line 355. It’s indicative of how it gathers its food; a process by it ʻeku (digs) for puʻu (bugs) in the ground. The bird’s call also sounds like its new name, a common device in traditional Hawaiian nomenclature.
