“The vibrant limu entwined with pūkoʻakoʻa found in the cool deep waters”. This Croisettea species is found in the ʻAuʻau channel near Lahaina, Maui. Aunty Tammy Harp, a CWG member from Lahaina, recalls Uncle Skippy Hau and their numerous conversations about the ocean there, which includes an abundance of limu pūkoʻakoʻa (Halimeda sp.). Honoring uncle Skippy Hau's lifetime dedication to the ocean and his community, the term hau in the name honors him while also describing the coolness of the deep water where this limu is found. Koʻa in this name, is a reference to the pūkoʻakoʻa, which this Croisettea is often found entwined with as an epyphyte. Weo, sometimes short for ʻāweo, describes the vibrant colors found in the limu and acknowledges the abundance of ʻāweoweo in Lahaina as recalled by Aunty Tammy.
