This name can be literally translated as dog-(of)-short stature. It is a traditional name for a sea lettuce variety (no additional information found in the literature) that can be allocated specifically to the species found at Kānemilohaʻi. It is used here in reference to the ʻīlioholoikauaua (Hawaiian monk seal).
