Wāwaeʻiole o Kahuelokū (*Codium XXXX, Clade K) honours the brother of the famous Kauaʻi chief, Kawelo. Kahuelokū had a form as a rat, and was an advisor to Kawelo and his other brothers. This name was selected for this species as one of its locations is on Kauaʻi, the island famous for the Kawelo story.
