Ka limu Kālepahoʻokelewaʻa (Gracilaria kalepae, species #2) is named in honour of educator, navigator, and member of the CWG, Kālepa Baybayan. The ʻohana views the term kālepa as one that is wind-related; translating as “to flutter or wave, as a flag in the wind.” Additionally, kālepa is a synonym for peʻa, meaning the sail of a canoe. Kālepahoʻokelewaʻa means “kālepa that navigates the voyaging canoe,” or “sail of a voyaging canoe.” This name embodies Kālepa’s knowledge of wayfinding and navigation; sailing voyaging canoes to Papahānaumokuākea and beyond.
