Lichens and bamboo coral have a biological feature in common: they are different organisms living together symbiotically. Furthermore, lichens are often the only life growing at the highest parts of our mountains. As a potential ocean counterpart, the bamboo coral is found in some of the deepest parts of our island home. Two terms are offered here to represent bamboo corals. Ko‘a haea can be used when there is a need to specify that one is referring to bamboo corals and not lichens.
