Ka limu Manauea a Hōkūʻala (Gracilaria hokualae, species #7) is named in honour of mother & wife, ocean lover, and researcher, Hōkūala Kari Johnson. Like her name that refers to the “rising star,” Hōkūala’s leadership working in NOAA has been a light rising from the horizon that has helped shape Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, inspiring the next generation of ocean lovers, researchers, and protectors.
