“The dark and vibrant ʻōhelo”. This species is found in the ʻauʻau channel. In the Hawaiian dictionary, ʻōhelo huihui is found as a type of limu with no known species attached to it. Instead of using that name, to not mistakenly describe a species, we played off the name by replacing “huihui” with “uliuli'' to reference the deep vibrant pink color of this particular limu, as well as reference the depth of the ocean that it is found in; uliuli can refer to a deep color such as that of the open ocean or a rainforest. ʻŌhelo also describes the color of the limu in its reference to a ma uka plant (Vaccinium reticulatum) and its deep red-colored berries.
