The palihoa, Nihoa finch, is one of two endemic birds species on Nihoa and is similar to the ‘ekupu‘u (Laysan finch), but smaller. The palihoa gets its name from its behavior while near people on the steep slopes of Nihoa. e island is a harsh environment for birds, plants, and humans alike. While traversing on the dangerous rocky terrain, human visitors are often greeted by the palihoa as it hops nearby appearing curious, calm, and friendly.
