Ka limu Puʻuhonua (Gracilaria buzzyi, species #4) is named in honour of an aloha ʻāina, fisherman, and kupuna member of the CWG, Uncle Louis “Buzzy” Agard Jr. Influential in the establishment of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve, Uncle Buzzy has been an amazing leader in the protection of Papahānaumokuākea, inspiring generations of Native Hawaiians. He envisions Papahānaumokuākea as He Puʻuhonua no Hawaiʻi, a sanctuary for our ocean protection. The Hawaiian name of this limu remembers Uncle Buzzy’s vision and story.
