One of two endemic bird species of Nihoa Island, the Ulūlu has a color scheme that possesses rope-like tones, with a light belly and dark feathers above. A prominent physical characteristic of the Ulūlu is a frayed texture of feathers on its forehead. It is normally found in ground cover among the ‘āweoweo (Chenopodium sanwicheum) and ‘ilima (Sida fallax). In 1923, the Ulūlu received its common name, the Nihoa Millerbird, because its favorite food is the Miller moth (Hypsmocoma nihoa), which is endemic to the island of Nihoa.
