Ka limu Wahineʻailimu (Gracilaria fortnerae, species #6) is named in honour of artist, author, merchant marine captain, and limu-lover, Heather Fortner. Heather has been key in reminding our Hawaiʻi communities of our connection to limu, authoring one of the very first seaweed cookbooks, The Limu Eater: A Cookbook of Hawaiian Seaweed. The Hawaiian name meaning “the woman who eats limu” recognizes her contributions to limu knowledge.
